Trail Walk: Walking with History - Geology & Play Doh Day

  • Slate Valley Museum 17 Water Street Granville, NY, 12832 United States (map)

Free

The Slate Valley Museum will welcome the young and the young at heart for a special walk and a hands-on activity at the museum with Play Doh in celebration of Play Doh Day!

Slate is a metamorphic rock that is formed when shale - a sedimentary rock comprised partly of clay minerals - undergoes tremendous heat and pressure deep within the Earth's surface. Our activity will help us explore how clay (similar in texture to clay) and slate are different by using Play Doh. We will also have some clay for people to try out.

The walk will include part of the D&H Rail Trail, with about 20-30 minutes of moderate walking with brief stops for rest and discussion along the way. The walk will end at the museum for snacks and the Play Doh activity.

This program will originate at the access point directly adjacent to the Slate Valley Museum. Park in the museum lot and meet right outside the museum's front entrance!
